A rapidly changing landscape in college athletics, that was the message from BGSU Athletics Director and Vice President of Athletic Strategy, Derek Van De Merwe, at Tuesday’s Fall Falcon Sports luncheon.
Clint spent a few minutes with Derek after the luncheon to talk about the overwhelming show of support at the luncheon from members of the community and about the Protect College Sports Act of 2026 now under consideration in Washington D.C. that Derek said aims to create a comprehensive federal framework governing collegiate athletics, preempting the patchwork of state NIL laws with a uniform national standard, and providing a limited antitrust exemption for certain college sports regulations.

The Wood County Educational Service Center (WCESC) is expanding its Community-Based Diversion Program to meet rising demand for youth mental health and behavioral support, particularly in prevention and early intervention. Alana Stanbery-Sigg, Director of Prevention Education Programs joined Clint Wednesday morning to explain the addition of a new staff member and additions to diversion staff/expansion of that program.
According to Prevention Director Alana Stanbery-Sigg, the program is growing due to:
Rising demand for youth mental health services
The ESC’s role as the largest of only five Educational Service Centers in Ohio offering formal prevention programming
A school-based model that places prevention specialists directly in districts, reducing barriers like transportation, cost, and stigma.
The expansion is supported by:
A large-scale youth survey of nearly 9,000 students (grades 5–12) to guide targeted interventions in mental health, substance use, and Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) and a 91% success rate in keeping youth out of the justice system, as reported by the juvenile court.

BGSU Falcon Marching Band Director Jon Waters spoke to the Bowling Green Kiwanis Club – Ohio on Thursday to share his story of coming to Bowling Green State University 4 years ago and growing the Marching band to the largest at any college or University in the land!
Clint did a short interview with Jon after his presentation to get some insight into the first big BGSU Football Saturday this weekend. For 22 years our friends at the Thayer Family Dealerships have been hosting a classic car show to support the efforts of the Ronald McDonald House of Northwest Ohio. Saturday, September 5, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. (registration opens at 9 a.m.). The event will be held at Thayer Ford-Nissan, 18039 N. Dixie Highway, Bowling Green.

The show has become a staple of the region’s car show circuit, drawing enthusiasts from across Northwest Ohio and beyond. More than 100 vehicles are expected to compete for Best in Show and a variety of specialty awards, with all makes, models, and years welcome.

Joe also reminded us that the annual community grant application cycle officially opened on August 1st for 2027 grants. Local 501(c)(3) non-profit organizations and qualified public entities serving the Bowling Green area are invited to submit grant proposals for innovative programs that enhance the health, welfare, and overall vitality of the community.
The application deadline is October 9, 2026. Non-profit organizations operating within or serving the 43402 and 43403 zip codes are eligible. Complete guidelines, eligibility criteria, and application forms are available online on the Foundation’s website, www.bowlinggreenCF.org. Santa Clara firefighter Darrell L. Sales talked with Clint live this morning about his motivation for organizing the Bay to Brooklyn rides 15 years ago to commemorate the 10th Anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks.
Now making its third stop in the City of Bowling Green, Ohio during the 25th anniversary ride, Darrell was joined by fellow firefighter Aurelio Perez, who drove the support vehicle for the team the last time they made the transcontinental trek, and is riding this year and Julian Villavicencio, a member of Station 1 with the San Francisco Fire Department.

After falling just short in the National Championship game last season to the University of Tennessee, the BGSU Men’s Rugby program is ranked 2nd in the country in the latest preseason poll just behind the National Champions.
Legendary coach and now Director of Rugby operations at Bowling Green State University, Roger Mazzerella, joined Clint this morning to preview the upcoming season and talk about the major changes in the conference this year as well.
Mazzarella was on the university’s first team which started playing in 1968. He continued playing beyond graduation and took over as head coach. He remains involved even after passing the reins over to his son, Tony. He now serves as Director of Rugby Operations and primary recruiter. As a coach and captain Roger Mazzarella posted a 1,285-216-47 record, an .856 winning percentage. He has also captained or coached the club to 26 straight Mid- American Conference championships, eight national championship appearances and 16 Ohio or Michigan Collegiate Conference titles. The team won the National Championship in 2018.

Kim Lehman, a self-described “crazy band parent”, visited Clint Friday morning along with 4 members of the BGSU Falcon Marching Band to talk about an initiative that’s underway to feed the 600 member band a meal on BGSU Football game days this fall.

2026 has been a busy year for City of Bowling Green, Ohio Adrien Lowien-Kirian with one time funding for city residents to help with pruning their trees to keeping the city’s tree canopy under control and health and she was also selected as the 2026 Bicycle Spokesperson of the Year!
